What do you love most about being involved in sports as an adult?
The relationships! I’ve met so many incredible people during my sports journey. I still keep in touch with my ringette teammates from when I was a kid! I’m so thankful to have met so many incredible people along the way during my sports journey. And the exercise keeps me sane – for the most part.
Why do you think it's important for women to play sports in adulthood?
We spend so much of our adult lives working and trying to keep up with bills, housework, yard work, and family lives that it’s important to take time for ourselves. Not to mention the mental health benefits to it. Even a simple walk outside can turn the day around.
What would you say is the biggest benefit sport gives you?
Keeping active keeps me healthy – physically and mentally. I spent most of 2024 dealing with cancer and a couple of major surgeries. I can honestly say that my recoveries would not have gone as well had I not been in such good physical shape. I worked out and played hockey right up to a very large surgery in the fall. As soon as I was allowed I started walking again. Around the ward, to the end of the block, around the block, and eventually found my way back onto the ball hockey floor about a month sooner than I expected.
What's the best advice you have for other women who want to play sports?
Just go for it! I know it’s easier said than done because it can be very intimidating. Go and check out a ‘come try it’ event, chat with friends that play, go out and watch a game. I’ll go for a bike ride with you anytime! Or we can go play road hockey somewhere with a fun group of people. Don’t worry, there is almost always beers and laughs afterwards!
