ISLAND HOOPS BASKETBALL SOCIETY
Island Hoops Basketball Society ("IHBS") is a non-profit society that creates and amplifies opportunities for women and genderqueer people to build community around basketball on or near lək̓ʷəŋən lands (also known as Victoria, BC).
Participants in our programs come from a wide variety of backgrounds culturally, economically, and in their level of basketball ability. It is our goal to offer programming that accommodates all of these scenarios and more; to challenge experienced players and to help beginner players build strong foundations, while also keeping economic and cultural barriers to a minimum.
GET IN THE GAME:
Are you a trans or non-binary person nervous about coming out for the first time?
Island Hoops Basketball Society is proud of its reputation as a welcoming place for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. As you can see in our Gender Inclusion Policy, we invite genderqueer and trans folks of all genders to join us, and encourage gender-neutral language and proactive pronoun disclosure in our programs.
There are many trans folks who attend our programs regularly, and genderqueer people in leadership roles in IHBS. If you are worried you will be the 'first one', please know that you are entering a community that is already comfortable with and actively welcoming of genderqueer people, and that the leadership actively upholds this culture.
