Aminah Yasmeen | Ice Hockey

I play hockey. I just started this October for the first time ever. I've always played a lot of sports, but hockey was never one of them. I've skated but never played a hockey game or worn gear. I signed up for a learn to play program through the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation called Even Strength, which is coached by the Grant MacEwan Griffins women's hockey team.

What do you love most about being involved in sports as an adult?

Each time I stepped on the ice, it was the first time I was trying something. It was wild and scary, but also the most fun I've had in a long while. It gave me the confidence to sign up for other learn to play programs and even join a team this January for the first time ever.

Why do you think it's important for women to play sports in adulthood?

As adult women, we sometimes get so caught up in our responsibilities and obligations that we forget about ourselves. Being involved in sports, especially a team sport, helps break that cycle of isolation. I found I had something to look forward to each week (even though I was terrified). The women I've met through playing hockey have been supportive on the ice, but it translates to so much more off the ice as well.

What's the best advice you have for other women who want to play sports?

This year, I adopted the mindset of just going for it and seeing what happens. The worst thing that can happen is you suck at it but at least you can say you tried--and that's something to be proud of. The best thing that could happen is that you meet new friends, you learn a new skill, and you remind yourself that you can do incredible things. Just do it!
