Rach | Kind of Sporty | Basketball

I played basketball as a kid for a few years, but only really fell in love with it again at age 30. I've been playing for 5 years now.

What do you love most about being involved in sports as an adult?

I love that it's FUN! It's an epic workout that keeps me healthy as I get older, and I'm always excited to play. It never feels like a chore.

Why do you think it's important for women to play sports in adulthood? WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO PLAY?

I have two daughters. And while they don't like that I'm sometimes out of the house for games and training, they know that Mummy prioritises her health and happiness. I love all the conversations it's brought up with my kids about how it's okay to make mistakes and feel nervous about performing etc.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST BENEFIT SPORT GIVES YOU?

It impacts my health in so many ways, not just physical. It's been so powerful for my mental health as well as my social and emotional health. The court is where I can switch my brain off and take a break from the heaviness of the world. It gives me an outlet for some of my frustrations of the day as well!

What's the best advice you have for other women who want to play sports?

Exercise doesn't have to be something you suffer through. You can find something that makes you feel alive AND helps you stay fit and healthy. Sometimes it'll be scary or frustrating, especially when you make mistakes, but most of the time it will be pure, unadulterated FUN! Just make sure you prep before you hit the court; No one wants to get injured in the first few minutes!
