What do you love most about being involved in sports as an adult?

Why does anyone enjoy their hobby? But ultimately I think I'm a better person because of sport. It makes me feel good, physically and mentally. It gives me an outlet, it teaches me things about myself and life, it let's me be strong while reflecting on my weaknesses. It's something to do that's not doomscrolling but still a situation where I don't have to think about work or life more broadly. Plus, it's something meaningful to discuss when someone asks me what I got up to on the weekend.

Why do you think it's important for women to play sports in adulthood? What motivates you to play sports as an adult?

It's a place to build extra connections, meet people you might not have otherwise. You're getting new experiences, yet the time commitment is usually routine. It's time for yourself, in a way that shouldn't feel selfish, because staying active has so many proven health benefits.

What’S the biggest benefit sport gives you?

Health. Physical fitness is external, mental health is internal.

Goals. I can set them whatever size I need them to be, could be "go to the gym once this week" or "be selected for the High Performance team". One is entirely in my control, one depends on a lot of external factors.

What's the best advice you have for other women who want to play sports?

The barrier for entry is probably lower than you think! I can only speak to what I know in Australia, but there are Intro courses for umpiring, and triathlon events that are run in pools, or companies that can help you hire a bike, and in lots of different distances so you don't have to go “all in” straight away (either financially or in terms of skill).

In general, social teams or casual skill sessions can offer lower time commitments, and lower pressure environments if you're learning something new.
